Movie and Book Reviews
Hawk-21

Hey, I'm Ender and I'll be the one doing the movie and book reviews. Here's what I think of the books I've read and the movies I've see. I've decided to stop writing a summary for the movies, starting with I Spy . It takes too much time to write and and it takes away from what I like or dislike about the movie. If you really want a summary then, e-mail me.

Spiderman- This was an awsome movie. I've seen it three times so far, and it was just as good each time I saw it. I loved the special effects and the great way Tobey Maguire was able to portray Spidey. I'm a huge Spiderman fan and I was really impressed with the movie. Even the upside down kiss between Spidey and MJ. That was pretty freaky though.

X-Men- This was Marvel Comics first movie in years. All the ones that had been made before this had been complete disasters and some never even made it to video. I liked this movie but I really wish it had been more true to the comics. It should have the originally group of X-men (Cyclops, Jean, Iceman, Angel, and Beast.) Although it had Bobby Drake (Iceman), played by Shawn Ashmore, He was a student instead of a member, as was Kitty Pride(Shadow Cat) who came in around the time Wolverine, Storm, and the other newer members of the X-Men joined. But I would  really liked to have seen Wolverine and Sabretooth's long-standing rivalry on screen.

X-Men 2- Better than the first X-Men. It's already come and gone in theaters and will be available to but Nov. 25. This movie is seriously the best comic book movie out there, and if you don't believe me, look it up in Wizard magazine, it recieved #1 status, beating out 49 other movies.

Men in Black 2- This was a great sequel to the original MIB movie. It's about an alien who is looking for some Light thing andrealizes that it is still being kept on Earth, and the only person who possibly knows where the light is and how to stop her is Agent K, who had been neuralized in the first movie. The humor is this movie is awsome and Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones give a great performance.

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones- I really wasn't impressed with this movie. The dialouge was terrible, but most of the special effects were really good. It was all about Anakin's decent into the Dark Side and how a large group of Jengo Fett (Boba's father) had been created to serve the Republic, but the order had been place without anyone's knowledge. And as the Dark side grows the need for the army becomes greater. And thus the Clone Wars have begun... Really the best part of the movie was Yoda's fight scene, but that's about it.

Scooby- Doo- Now this was a hilarious movie. The CGI Scooby was pretty good for an animated dog, but he didn't look real enough. But then again the whole movie was pretty  much animated. It was great and I enjoyed every minute of it. The whole Mystery Inc. breaking up, and then being brough back together two years later by a theme park owner who is convinced that a curse is being put on the college students who come to the island. The big clue: that they all speak completely in lingos, and none of it makes any sense. I definately recommend this movie.

I Spy- I have to say that Eddie Murphey has gotten a little lazy. This is not some of his best work. The movie was ok but it could have been a lot better. There were several lines that were actually hilarious, which made up for the weak plot and yet another performance where Owen Wilson seems to act the same way as in nearly every other movie he's been in. It was kinda corny too. I did like the last line though: "I need two things of jelly and two parachutes." I probably should have gone to see Red Dragon that day as I had originally planned.

Virtuosity-This is an awsome movie and probably few of you out there have heard of it or remember it. It has Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe and is probably Crowe's first movie. I don't really know. It came out in the mid-90's but had awsome special effects. It's about (yeah I know I said I wouldn't do this but it helps tell my opinion) a killer (Crowe) that was created in a police training computer program escapes and only a prison inmate and former cop (Washington) can track and catch him. I really like how they show them training in the progam. And the ending is such a plot twist. Russel Crowe plays a really good phycho.

Dungeons and Dragons- It was pretty good for a movie based on a RPG game. The plot was really good, but some of the acting could have been a little better. Especially the guy who played Damador (sp?) when he has the thing in his head and he's trying to show real pain. I liked the dragons a lot, but I hated that the killed Marlon Waynes' character Snails. But then again, I guess he comes back in the end, or maybe not, I not sure that last sequence was really confusing and didn't make a whole lot of sense (most likely for those who neer played the RPG game.)

Evolution-Only one word can describe this movie: hi-larious. Excellent comedic performances by David Duchovny, Orlando Jones, Sean William (Go Stifler!!!), and Julieanne Moore. There is nothing bad to say about this movie, not only is it incredible funny but it's educationa too (well maybe not) but we did wach it when I was in biology, our teacher said in more or less told all of the theories for the cration of life on Earth, or something like that. Anyway, the movie's good, go see it.

Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls- I know Jim Carrey's not had the easiest time in life or with the success of many of his movies, but this sequel to the original is awsome. I could probably quote nearly the whole movie if I had to. I've only seen the original once, but I have no idea how many times I've seen this movie. It is really hilarious, and if you haven't seen it then you are missing out. The slinky scene, the projector scene, the chasing the bad guy scenes, and yes, even the rhino scene are excellent. I dare you not to laugh during the rhino scene.

8 Mile- This was really a terrible movie. The concept and plot were great but as a whole it left something to be desired. It ends just after Eminem wins the "battle" and leaves the building, there isn't even a 'what happens later' caption or anything. It leaves you kinda hanging. He says he's going to do things on his own, but I wnat to know how he did it. How he succeeded in his music career. This is not the kind of movie that you can make a sequel of, and if you tried it would be hard to find more materiel for the script that is different than just how he struggles to become a musician.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring- Tolkien's great epic comes to the big screen, well ok FOTR is already out to own, but at least they made the movie. The graphics are awsome and hardcore Tolkien fans will not be dissappointed. It hold true enough to the book, but it leaves out a lot that I would like to have seen such as The Old Forrest,Tom Bombadil, and the incident on the barrows. Some people said it was too long, but I say it wasn't long enough, they should have added those scenes. The cast was great, no complaints there, Ian McKellan played the perfect Gandalf. The only other complint I have is for those morons who saw it who thought that this was the only movie and it ended in the middle(trust me  I've heard stories about those people, they really are that dense.)

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers- This movie was just as good as the first, but I do have more complaints on this one. They mainly deal with how true they keep to the book. There are many things added that were not in the book, like the whole romance thing between between Aragorn and Arwyn, Faramir taking Frodo and Sam to Osgiliath, and his attraction to the ring. I am also dissappoined that they only showed about half of the book as a whole. It told half of what happens to Aragorn and the others (Helm's Deep is about half way through) and half of what happens to Frodo, Sam, and Gollum. Which means that they will either have to cut or shorten a lot from Return of the King, or make it even longer. Now for my good comments about it: Gollum was phenominal, the CGI acting and the voice. It is amazing how perfectly they captured the tortured mind of Gollum. Also the battle at Helms Deep was amazing. And there are certinly no complaints about Treebeard.

XXX- Want explosions? This movie's got 'em. Vin Diesel plays the ultimate anti-Bond and does an awsome job at it. The main thing that drew me into this film were the extreme sports and all the explosions. And beyond that is a great plot concerning a con being forced to work for the NSA and find out about a poisonous gas called silent night. I really liked how Xander Cage (Deisel) is able to easily get in good with the enemy because, after all, he is exactly like them. But this movie was mostly about the explosions.

Robin Hood: Men in Tights- "There's boids, there's sqvoils, let's bless them all until we get fashniked" As far as robin hood parodies (I guess it's a parody) go this is the most hilarious. Hey, any movie where they have to refer to the script for laughs can't be all bad. Besides it has Patrick Stuart as King James and Isaac Hayes (Chef on South Park) as Asneez. And don't forget his son, Achoo. But you really have to see Blinkin Robin's blind manservent. There are nonstop laughs with this movie. Go see it now!

The New Guy- I guess I'm on a roll with the comedies, cause here's another good one. I'm sure they've made other movies like this one, but I'm sure they didn't have the comedic skills that the writers and actors for this movie had. It is another must see comedy. DJ Qualls plays an excellent super nerd turned bada$$. I think I need to go see it again right now.

Kill Bill Vol. 1- One word: wow. After seeing it I wasn't sure whether it was a good wow or a bad wow. Now, I want to see it again. It was a good movie by itself, but I haven't seen any other Quentin Tarentino movies to compare it with. It was very bloody, even though most of the blood looked fake. Most of the time when limbs were hacked off, It reminded me of the school play scene in the Adams Family, where Wednesday and Pugsley hack off each other's fake limbs. But overall this movie was good.

Anger Management-

Daredevil- Not one of Ben Affleck's better roles. The movie was ok, as far as movies go. The plot works well within the comics universe, but it could have been stronger. But the ghost world effect (how it looks when he senses things) is awesome. Michael Clarke Duncan did a convincing job as the Kingpin, and Jennifer Garner is hot. She plays a good Elektra, can't wait to see the Elektra movie, when it's made. Too bad Coolio's part didn't make it into the movie.
Oh, yeah, and Colin Ferrel played a convincing psycho.

The Hulk- Well, the graphics were awesome (specifically on the close ups of the CGI Hulk), and the fight scenes were great, but it lacked in plot. That seems to be a problem with many movies. The actor were fine in their roles, but the plot could have been structured better. The ending made absolutely no sense. What's the deal with the huge bubble? I think they should have changed that or changed it to make more sense. I also didn't like the split screen thing Ang Lee did in many of the scenes, I know it was to give it a comic book feel, but it got annoying.

The Core- The movie is awesome. Great graphics, great plot, great everything.
It's scary to think what would happen in the Earth's core stopped rotating, but I think they pulled it off well enough. Everyone should see it.

8 Crazy Nights- Surprisingly it was a lot funnier than most people made it out to be. I missed it when it was in theaters, but when I finally saw it, it was histerical. Oh, that crazy Adam Sandler. Sure, some of the humor is childish, so to see it, get in touch with your inner child and watch it. Hehe, Whitey...

Dreamcatcher- One of the few Stephen King movies I've seen. The movie was good, but a lot of it didn't make any sense. They never answered what SSDD was. Or gave any real significance to Morgan Freeman's charcter. He was just the crazy general, who wanted more than anything to stop the alien threat but beyond that there was nothing. The whole thing with Dudits was great, but they really should have answered some of those questions. I guess I'll have to read the book to figure out more.

School of Rock- It was a role specifically created for Jack Black if there ever was one. The movie was hilarious, a must see. There is comedy from start to finish (even to the end of the credits). I have heard no bad reviews for this movie and have none to give. Go see it and enjoy.

League of Extraordinary Gentleman-

Matrix- I'm sure everyone's already seen it (it's been out for several years) but I still have to say it's awesome. It started a whole new was of filming, it was new and innovative and gave the perfect start to the trilogy.

Matrix Reloaded- Unfortunatley, what the first started, in my opinion, didn't continue on to the second one. The movie helpped futher the plot of the story line, but except for new characters there wasn't anything new to the movie. The Merovingian seemed almost pointless, and the Architect was long-winded and almost incoherent. It was good as a stand alone movie, but it didn't fit with the whole. I feel that Morpheus gets ripped off as a character in this movie and Revolutions. He does not seem to be the great man we see in the first movie, he is just another pilot in the defense against Zion.

Matrix Revolutions- Fortunately, what Reloaded lacked, Revolutions somewhat made up for. The movie perfectly wraps things up in a not so original ending (but an effective on nonetheless.)  There is plenty of action, the fight scenes are spectacular, especially the final one between Neo and Smith. My only real complaints are the whole part with the Merovingian and the train master, and the very end. The Part with the Merov. and TM seemed to just be stuck in there and have no real purpose except to explain what happens o Neo at the ned of Reloaded, but it's a half-assed, pointless explanation. And the end was kinda lame. It's all well and good to have the Oracle sitting on a bench watching the new world, but it was a weak ending to the movie.

Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines- Whereas some people hated it, I loved it. I thought it was a great addition to the existing two movies. I don't know what people are complaining about, but it fits in well with the context of the other two movies, especially since this one was made how many years later? Ah-nold was the perfect terminator as usual, and what's her name who played the T-X was perfect. It's a good movie in my opinion.

Lord of the Rings-For those of you who have read LOTR you know that it is a very long book. For those of you who haven't, you probably still know that it is very long, but you probably don't know much of what it's about. Eve if you have seen The Fellowship of the Ring (FOTR) you might still not know a whole lot, so let me break it down for you. There is this magic ring that was created by the dark lord Sauron, it was taken from him and then lost under the mountains, but then it was found by a halfling, a hobbitt, Bilbo Baggins (the tale of him finding the ring is in the Hobbit.) The ring is discovered some time later to be the One Ring (or at least the one that can control all the others) that was created by Sauron. Bilbo's cousin or nephew (I forget which), Frodo, then has to take the ring back to the volcanic mountain where it was forged and throw it in, destroying it. With him go nine companions to equal out the threat of the nine Nazgul (wraiths that are looking for the ring to bring it back to Sauron). Because the threat of Sauron regaining the ring concerns all races, with Frodo goes, three other hobbits: Sam, Merry, and Pippin, an elf: Legolas, a dwarf: Gimli, a man from the great race of kings: Aragorn (Strider), and Gandalf  of the Istari (otherwise knows as wizards.) The book follows their trek to Mt. Doom to destroy the ring and back again. It is a good read for those with plenty of time and like a lot of detail in their reading, but also for those who love a good fantasy-world adventure.

The Silmarillion- Not bad for a history book. It is all about the history of Middle Earth, from the creation of Earth to the end of the Third Age (the events of Lord of the Rings.) It mainly focuses on the elves, though, and most of the tales are pretty interesting. My only problem with it is that it is just to hard to remember most of the characters and what they do. Only some of the main ones are the most memorable like: Faenor, Fingolfin, Finrod, Turin, and of course the bad guys Morgoth and Sauron. I definately recommend it for those who want to know more about Middle Earth and how thigs came about up through the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

Ender's Game- This has to be one of my favorite books. It takes place in the year 2070, where parents are only allowed to have two children, except for special circumstances where the govt. can give permission to have a "Third," or "Fourth", and so on. This is because they are looking for the most intelligent children to defend Earth from a possible third invasion by a race of aliens known as the Formics (or more commonly called the Buggers.) The first two invasions nearly wiped out humanity and if the people in charge can get to the geniuses early enough, they can train them to defend against thethreat. Andrew "Ender" Wiggin's parents already had two very intelligent children, Peter and Valentine, but one is too aggressive for what the govt. is looking for (Peter) and the other is too passive (Valentine.) Under special permission Ender is allowed to be born and he is exactly what their looking for. The rest of the book has to do with his adventures in Battle School, where he learns the skill he needs to become an effective leader. The pressure to be all he can be in the school is immense. Does Ender make it through? Does he go up against the Buggers? Read this awsome book and find out. It is actually a really complicated book to explain and you really can't describe it without going into too much detail. This book is so good that I actually forced it onto a reading list for an English project at school by lining up the whole Ender series on my desk and repeatedly demanding that we read it. Naturally, my group was able to read it and they loved it.

Ender's Shadow- This is not really a sequel to Ender's Game but a parallel novel. It takes place around the same time as Ender's Game, but it focuses on Bean, Ender's friend and virtual double, except for the whole height thing and the fact that Bean is actually smarter than Ender. It starts out with how Bean grew up an the streets of Rotterdam and moves on up to his acceptance to Battle School. Then it leads up right to the end of Ender's Game, all in Bean's perspective, of course. This book is just as good as Ender's Game, and it gives you more behind the scenes things than what Ender's Game gives you.

The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide- This book combines all the books in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series. All are hilarious, and everything in them is too random to even try and explain. But I'll try. It's got this guy Arthur Dent who is taken off of Earth moments before Earth was destroyed, by a friend of his who turns out to really be an alien hitchhiker who is writing parts of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. They go on a whole buch of crazy adventures, with a two headed guy Zaphod Beeblebrox, a girl Arthur once met at a party, Trillian, and everyone's favorite Marvin the Paranoid Android. Actually, this really is too complicated to explain, so read it, I promise it will be a good series to read.

The Count of Monte Cristo- For those of you who saw the movie, it is nothing like the book. The book is so much better, but longer. 73 chapters for the abridged version to be exact, but worth it. It, like the movie, is about Edmond Dantes who is falsely accused and sent to prison. After 14 years he is able to escape and is able to exact revenge on all those who caused his imprisonment by using an incredibly large treasure to become the Count of Monte Cristo. The story is all about the relationships he establishes and breaks in order so that justice be done. It may take a while  to read, but this book is well worth it.

A Farewell to Arms-This has to be one of the lamest books I've ever read, and I would never have read it if it weren't for school. This American officer in the Italian army in WW1 falls in love with an English nurse, but for some reason they get way too into it and start pretending to be married. The officer basically deserts the army and goes on the run with her, but no one seems to care after awhile. This book also has the weirdest progression of conversations I have ever seen. When the two first meet, she basically starts talking about the dead guy who she once was going to marry. And by the second meeting they are already telling each other that they love each other, and it is not even a love at first sight kind of thing.

Read 'em. Watch 'em. They're good. Trust me. Except the ones I pan.
